Sony Mhc-gx450 Has Muffled Sound.

It seems my stereo has a muffled sound, almost as though it has a mute feature on. It puts out sound, but very little. there is no mute option on the remote nor the system. Kind of sounds like there are some wires crossed going to a speaker, but thats not whats causing it, because even with all speakers unplugged and just headphones plugged in, the samae sound occurs frm the headphones. I have tried everything on this darn thing, but cant seem to get it to shake the house like it should. even when cranked, you have to literally have your ear up to the speakers to hear it. any ideas what might be going on?
