After Dyi Install, Unit Will Not Turn On.

For power I hooked black to black (-) and red to red (+) and front panel will not display.  The manual at page 6 states #1 is the off button, #3 is the Volume Control regardless of twist or press. and #4 is the source button and "power on".  I tried all three and nothing happened with 12V of power.  Then I tried the + positive connection to the Yellow line.  I heard a noise from inside but nothing was seen on the panel.  What's up? What am I doing wrong for getting power to the unit and seeing the display.  I want to know the unit works before hooking up speakers.
