Playing Tapes

Hi there, We are attempting to playback our recordings on the Sony CCD TRV16E Handycam. When we play these back, there is a loud static noise and no image. When we fast forward, we can see the image however, when we play again, it does not allow us to see or hear the recording. All other features of the camera still work. Can you assist?
