Connecting An External Keyboard

Is it possible to connect an external keyboard to a BDP-s580 player; say, through the USB port? This would be a convenient way aroung the pain of using the remote control & on-screen keyboard. I tried simply plugging in to the USB jack on the front & rebooting, but saw no indication that the software saw the keyboard.
