Bobbin Keeps Jamming In Shuttle

I have a singer 5500 fashion mate, and I just pulled it out of the box, and the bobbin keeps jamming. Whenever we try to sew anything within two stitches it gets very tight, won't move, and I get about 5-6 strings that are bundled up. Can anyone help?
