Is Anyone Aware That The Sensors For The Garage Door Openers Have An Issue?

I had a 1/2 HP Craftsman garage door opener that worked perfectly for over 25 years.  It finally died and I bought a new one, only this time I purchased a 3/4 HP unit.  I have since had to buy window shades for my garage, as the sensor is not protected from light and my door will not close if a ray of light crosses it's path!  I've never been so annoyed in all my life.  The newer units have sensors with no protective casing around them, hence the reason for the problem.  Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, has Sears devised a solution?  I didn't pay $300+ for this only to have it have these issues!
