My first guess is the brake shift interlock solenoid (or a similar name) is defective. This is the clicking sound you hear when you step on the brake to shift from park into drive. It is located at the top of the brake pedal, under the dash. If this is defective, or if the fuse to it is blown, your car will not shift into drive. It's a safety feature to prevent accidental shifting into gear. If the fuse is not blown, replace the solenoid. It's around $20 or so at your local auto parts store.
Guess number two is the shifter linkage is jammed from a spring or something else getting in the way of the shifter movement. You would have to take the cover off of the shifter to check for that problem. The shifter cable could also be disconnected in the engine compartment. Check to see that it is still connected and not binding anywhere along the path that it follows under the hood.
