What Would Cause My Emergency Brake Light To Stay On?

My 1998 Saturn SW1's emergnecy brake light on the dashboard came on and won't go off.  I pulled the emergency brake up then released it but it still is on.

I had the same problem. Turned out break fluid was low. Filled it up and light warning turned off
