Fabric Softer Problems

I have noticed lately that my clothes have fabric softener stains on them. They are darkened areas on my clothing but cannot be seen while wet. Once you put clothing into the dryer the fabric softener or stain is permanently set. I have tried the self-cleaning mode, I've tried to clean out the detergent trays but nothing is helping. How do I fix this.
