Saab 900 S 2.3 5 Speed Transmission Fluid.

The oil in a '99 should be compatible with Redline MTL if your mechanic can get that. It's just the later MTF 0063 that has compatibility issues, and that wasn't used until at least 2000.Actually, the first improved gear box oil, also synthetic, could not be mixed with other oils, as well:

The new oil has several advantages, such as:
• it withstands temperatures >150°C (302°F)
• it increases bearing service-life
• it counteracts surface damage to gear flanks
• gear-shifting is perceived as smoother, especially in cold weather
• it can be used to advantage in older gearboxes
The oil has been introduced in production from chassis no. V2033279- (3-/5-d) and V7008692- (Cabriolet without turbo) respectively, and
V7008812- (Cabriolet with turbo), but it can be used to advantage when reconditioning or repairing gearboxes. In such cases, it is important to
read the instructions under the heading “Procedure”.
The filler plug on gearboxes from the factory that contain the new oil are marked with the text:
“USE ONLY SAAB OIL NO 8748733” IMPORTANT The new oil must not be mixed with other types of oil but there is no problem changing to this oil in an old gearbox as long as the instructions found under the heading “Procedure” are followed.

Bulletins SI-MI Reference : S9300514 10/28/01 Page 2 of 4 47 76 266 (CA: 30568130) Filler plug Procedure 1 Drain the oil from the gearbox by unscrewing the drain plug (3). 2 Fill with 1.0 litre (1.05 quarts) of the new oil (plug 1) and run the car so that the oil flows thoroughly through the system. 3 Drain the gearbox (plug 3). 4 Fill the gearbox with new oil to the correct level (1.8 litres; 1.9 quarts). Check with the level plug (2). After this procedure, the oil does not need changing. 5 Fit a new filler plug (1).

If the customer is in an emergency situation, another oil with the same specification (fully synthetic Dexron III ATF) as gearbox oil 400 108 247 (CA: 30567840) may be used, on condition that it is changed as soon as possible and that no damage has been caused. If this policy is not adhered to by importers, dealers or customers, it can result in possible compensation being withdrawn or that a possible complaint will be rejected.

From Saab Cars USA. 2002 04 03 Subject: New 9-3 and 9-5 Manual Transmission Fluid
Beginning with the VIN's listed below, all 2002 Saab models with manual transmissions have factory fill with a new manual transmission fluid. This fluid is designated: SAAB MTF 0063 and is NOT to be confused with Saab Synthetic Manual Transmission fluid that has been used since 1996.
NOTE: The new fluid is NOT to be mixed with other manual gearbox fluid, including Saab Synthetic Manual Transmission fluid that has been used since 1996.
The new fluid is factory fill in vehicles from the following VIN's:
9-3 (Trollhattan) 22023982 9-3 (Finland) 27007452 9-5 23027675
In addition, manual transmissions for 1994 and later models that have been rebuilt in Sweden will have the new fluid added. These transmissions will be identified by a label marked "MTF 0063" attached to these transmissions.
The new fluid will improve shift quality. Completely drain oil from gearbox 2. Fit drain plug and add 1.5 liter of new MTF 0063 fluid 3. With front wheels off the ground, start the engine, engage first gear and run for approx. 20 seconds. 4. Repeat steps 1-3. 5. Drain and refill with 1.5 liters of MTF 0063 fluid 6. Total fluid used for this process, including final fill is 4 ½ liters.
