I have just purchased a universal remote, and it does not allow me to access any of mt cable channels

You must program the remote with the correct code for your cable box. Until that ios done nothing will work. Also many universal remotes do not have the proper buttons to select all functions available on the factory remote control. Without model numbers of both the TV, cable box, and remote I can be of no additional help.
