Cover Stitch Tension Problems

I have been trying to use the cover stitch on the 4852 with the tension settings suggested in the manual but the underside is all loopy and the top stitches are skipping and then the thread breaks. I have tried changing needles - schmetz 705 - rethreading needles every time and increasing the tension. Any other things I can try?
