Help! Cannot Attach Hand-held Nozzle

attempting to attach hand held nozzleand hose to the cleaner neck ....Have aligned the guide tab on top of the unit's neck with slot in hose collar. depressed button but cannot push the hose collor up onto the unit to the point that button hole aligns w/ button? What do I need to do to advance the hose collar so it advances far enough to have button fit into button hole? Thank you. Teri
