1997 Olds Aurora. Starter Turns, Motor Does Not Roll Over.
There was a ticking noise. I was driving and trans quit moving I shut the car off and tried to restart and the starter turns, but the motor wont roll over. With the starter turning, the motor is not rolling over.

The timing belt being broken is a strong possibility. The motor would crank but absolutely not even try to fire. In case it is the timing belt its important to NOT try and keep cranking it over because you could bend the rods and turn a timing belt repair into an engine overhaul. look under the front of the car and see if you can see remenents of the belt hanging down. You may not be able to see it tho if the timing cover is a fully enclosed cover. (im not sure on those cars). If not you may need to remove the timing cover to find out. Which would involve removing most if not all of the accessory belt drive system to get to it. Honestly it would be best to have a qualified mechanic look at it. My best advice is IF it is the timing belt, cranking the motor wont help and could cause much more damage.
