2001 Frontier Crew Cab Rear Window Defrost Operation.

The rear window defroster works well when I turn it on but when the switch is in the off position it frequently comes on by itself.  I can see it is on because of the lit indicator light.  Sometimes when it when it is on I hear a clicking sound from below the dash on the left side.  Is this noise a relay and could that be the problem or could the dash switch be bad?
