Blinking Over Drive Light, Car Not Shifting Out

approximately 3 years ago my 2000 nissan maxima`s check engine light came on and my vehicle would not shift out at app 45 mph. I was told to stop the car and turn the engine off and it would reset itself. i have driven every since then and it occassionally does the same thing. Now the OD light is flashing when I start it some mornings. Any idea what this problem is? I was originally told it was a speed sensor, but the check engine light does not come on now to read the code to me during diagnosis. mph
