how much oil do I add when dipstick reads half?

A very rough estimate is you have to add one quart of oil for every inch the oil level is below the "full" line. Your best bet is to add half a quart and then check the dipstick. If it still looks low, add the other half quart of the oil. Repeat the procedure as necessary until the oil is up to the "full" line.
