Recurring Moisture Inside Car On Windshield And Loss Of Vent Selection.

We have moisture appearing on the inside of the windshield like what is seen on a mirror in the bathroom after a shower. Sometimes it is so much that we have to pull over and wipe it off with a rag. At the same time the controls for selecting a desired vent are inactive. No matter where the knob is placed airflow only goes to the floor and windshield. The dash vents seem disconnected. Where should I begin troubleshooting?
