Fix The Short Going To Entire Fuse Box

There is a short going to the entire fuse box on my 2006 Mercury Mariner Premier 3.0L, not an individual fuse. How can this be addressed and fixed? Brand new battery installed yesterday and the negative terminal was hot after going to the store and back. When disconnected and reconnected, it sparked and immediately melted that terminal. The truck was off and keys were out of the ignition. Please help!!!!
