Differentials/gears/steering

When I drive, there is a grinding sound, like gears out of sync.  After some time, the cars makes a LOUD THUMP and the "grind" sound goes away, for a while.  At the same time, the SUV will flip between normal and 4 wheel drive. Also, when trying to make a tight turn either direction, the car will NOT move
