The Tailight Fuse Blew In A 1993 Mercury. How Do We Stop It

WE HAD THE WIRES CUT IN BACK FOR THE TAILLIGHTS, BACK-UP LIGHTS, ETC.  MY HUSBAND WENT TO REPAIR IT AND NOW THE FUSES KEEP BLOING.  THE FUSE FOR THE TAIL LIGHTS BLEW A COUPLE OF TIMES TONIGHT.  HOW DO WE STOP IT?
