is it ok to run premium gas in a 96 cougar xr7   V8 4.6L

Most cars will run better with higher octane fuel. The only problem with higher octane fuel is that it is harder to ignite than lower octane fuels. So if you have any difficulty starting your car with the higher octane fuel, go back to the 87 or 89 octane.

Big V8 engines definitely run worse with 87 octane. My 440 Road Runner would run terrible with anything less than 93 octane. Higher octane doesn't give you any more power, but it does reduce knocks and pings in an engine that has that problem with lower octane gas.
