Partial Loss Of Sound

It,s been a while since I used my Memorex MD6451R-BLK CD player. As I am about to head off on vacation and anticipate buying some CD's I thought I'd check it out. The sound level is VERY low and uncontrolable. All the external connections are OK, the batteries are new and I've tried 3/4 CD"s I know play OK. What's happened.
