What Causes Car Not To Come Out Of Park?

I just had a engine put in my car. Engine runs good, went to back out of driveway and car would not come out of park. Mechanic replaced fuse and it worked for a minute, then hung up again. Went to drive it home today after he "fixed it" and the speedometer quit, all the needles dropped, car was still running good. I pulled over to see what the problem was and it is stuck in park again. What could be causing that?
