Machine Cycle & Door Release

How can I reset the machine to begin a new wash cycle?  The problem occured when the cycle would not begin and the door would not release after the pause/cancel button was pressed.  I tried the step of unplugging but still it would not release.  I removed the front panel and was able to release the door.  Now, how do I get the machine to complete a wash?
