Cord Type

We have ordered a 3 prong electrical plug for our new Maytag MEDC40VW dryer (to match the existing 3 holed outlet) The outlet is old and does need replacing; but my friends tell me that I must change it to a 4 holed outlet and purchase a 4 pronged plug to come up to fire codes. Isn't this machine of an older design that should match the 3 pronged plug and old codes? And is this adequately safe? My whole house is old and running on old appliance with an old breaker system; I've never had a fire!
