Gray Squares And Firmware Update

I have been getting gray squares all over my papers. After going to the Lexmark site, it stated I should update the firmware. I have attemped to do this for 2 days now and once I get through the first step and go to the "run" portion of the update, the bar gets about half way and then freezes up. As of this moment it has been 1.5 hours and still in the same spot. How long do I leave it and how do I know when it is done? Also, I did go through the cleaning process it said to do, and the little squares are still present. I should mention this is a work printer, though I am the only one who uses it. It is a PRO915 model. I need help. Thank you.
