Dvd Reads Only Cd's

I have a comparitively new DVD drive. There was never a problem with the drive. However, the drive clogged up and was quite dirty. This did not affect its performance significantly. Then all of a sudden, it refused to read DVD's. Normally when you insert a DVD, the drive draw closes and once closed, the light starts blinking and thereafter, the drive spins up and reads the DVD. Now, the light starts blinking as soon as the draw starts moving into the closed position. It does not blink long before it stops and that's the end. Nothing. The drive does not even attempt to spin up when I try to play a DVD. Its like there is no disc in the drive at all. However, with a CD, everything occurs as per normal and the drive plays the CD. I have had the drive for a year and I bought it brand new.
