Staining Clothes

My kenmore 796.4031 stains my clothes. It doesn't happen every load, but probably once ever 3 weeks. the technicians say we use to much soap, but we barely put soap in the dispenser and still have the same problem. The technicians tell me to take the basket out in the bottom in the of the washer, run a rag back in a plastic drain line to remove this blackish/gray scum. Please help me.

This is a common problem with this model and is caused by the drum seal, which is costly to replace.
