Tools Required
- High quality 18″ ratcheting breaker bar with 1/2″ drive
- 22mm impact socket with 1/2″ drive
- 6″ Gear puller with 2 or 3 hooks (Harmonic Balancer puller will not work since there are no threaded holes to take advantage of).
- 24″ pry bar
- Hammer
- 10mm and 12mm sockets with 3/8″ drive
- Ratchet with 3/8″ drive
- Jack and Jack Stand
- Remove serpentine belt. For later reference, here is the belt path diagram. To remove, you must first release tension on the belt by shifting the belt tensionner downward. This is accomplished by inserting the 3/8″ drive ratchet into the slot on the face of the tensionner. Once inserted, you will be able to push down on the ratchet with some force and the tensionner will move. You need only relieve the tension long enough to remove the belt from one of the pulleys. The Camshaft pulley is at the top and is a good choice. Once the belt is off the pulley, you can release the tensionner. You will now need to remove the tensionner to complete removal of the belt. This is accomplished by simply removing the two tensionner mounting bolts. While standing at the front of the car you can see one bolt, while the other bolt is somewhat hidden on the other side of the tensionner. You will need a 12mm socket to remove the bolts. Once the tensionner is off, you can remove the serpentine belt from the vehicle.
- Remove front right tire. Remove the tire and support the vehicle on appropriate jack stands. This is necessary in order to gain access to the Harmonic Balancer.
- Remove engine cover. The Engine cover is a plastic shield that sits between the wheel well and the engine block. It has an access hole in that allows you to turn the crankshaft manually via socket. However, you will need direct access to the Harmonic Balancer, so the cover has to go. To remove the cover, remove the 4 bolts that hold it to the frame. You will need a 10mm socket.
- Remove the Crankshaft bolt. This bolt can not be turned using a ratchet because doing so will simply turn the crankshaft. So you have two choices, you can use a professional air powered impact wrench or the “starter method”. Note that an electric impact wrench will most likely NOT work as this bolt is big and on tight. If you do have a solid air powered impact wrench, then go ahead and remove the bolt. You will need a 22mm socket. If the bolt can be removed, proceed to step 6.
- The Starter Method. For those of us who are not fortunate enough to have compressors and air tools, there is a great trick to removing the bolt which works perfectly on this model. Because the engine cranks clockwise, we simply need to stop the bolt from turning while the engine cranks. This makes the starter motor do the work for us. To accomplish this, you will need a heavy duty, high quality breaker bar with at least a 1/2″ drive on it. The very first thing you will need to do before attempting this method is to disable the ignition system. You DO NOT want the car to start. The easiest way to do this is to remove the front three spark plug wires. With that done, place the socket on the crankshaft bolt and attach the breaker bar so that it is pointing down and to the right (about 4-5 o’clock). Bring the ratchet up until it hits the suspension arm. If the ratchet wants to dip down, support it with a jack stand so it stays up. You are trying to prevent the ratchet from turning quickly and striking something. With the breaker bar supported, you are now ready to crank the engine. You only want to turn the key briefly, just enough to crank the engine but not turn it over. The first time you attempt should do it, but try a few more times if at first you do not succeed. After you crank the engine, check the bolt. It should be loose enough to turn with your fingers. If the bolt is now free, you can continue. If however the bolt has not come loose, then you must seek advice outside of this article.
- Remove the Harmonic Balancer. This is the hard part. The Harmonic Balancer sits in front of the crankshaft sprocket. Most likely a chemical weld has occurred by way of oxidation between the two parts, so it will take some effort to break that bond. Nevertheless, know that you must remove the Harmonic Balancer only and not the crankshaft sprocket (which turns the timing belt). The first thing to do is use the gear puller to pull the Harmonic Balancer forward just enough so you can see the spline of the crankshaft sprocket. Do not pull any further than necessary. As stated above, the sprocket turns the timing belt. If you affect the timing then you will need to seek professional help. Once the joint between the Harmonic Balancer and crankshaft sprocket is visible you will need to apply force to break the bond. To do this, put the pry bar between the two parts and strike the top with a hammer. You may need to do this many times while rotating the Harmonic Balancer in order to break the entire bond. It took me nearly 30 minutes of heavy pounding to do it – so just be patient. Know only that the two parts are supposed to come apart and you are on the right track.
- Success. Once the Harmonic Balancer comes off you can simply install the new one. Just line up the keyway with the hole in the new balancer. You will want to lubricate the mating surface of the new balancer with engine oil before bolting it on. This will assure that the proper seal is achieved. You may apply loctite to the crankshaft bolt and tighten as much as you can until you start to turn the crankshaft. The turning of the engine should do the rest of the work in tightening up the bolt once the car is started.
- Installation. Now you just need to put everything back together and insert the serpentine belt again. Installation is the reverse of removal.
- By this you will change harmonic balancer .
