My Hoover Turbo Cyclonic Doesn't Pick Up Very Much. What's Wrong?

I cleqn the canister regularly, adjust for pile length, and it still hardly picks up anything.  Pieces of thread, lint, and paper tidbits to just lay there.  We've been Hoover fans for years, but this machine just doesn't seem to perform.  Suggestions are welcome.   Thanks.
