How Can I Cancel Printing?

I have an HP deskjet 1000 printer, and I made a mistake, so I wanted to cancel the print job. When I hit "cancel" in the box nothing happened. Just continued printing 77 copies (my original count that I hit was 5). The only way I could stop it from printing was to turn off the printer. This happened last night, so when I turned my printer back on this morning, it continued printing. How to I canel the print job? I really don't need 500 copies of a squirrel.
