This could be happening for a number of reasons. First, I would make sure that the temperature control dial is actually changing the temperature of your straightener. If it isn't, I would recommend replacing it. If the temperature is changing, but it just seems hotter than it is supposed to be, I would contact the manufacture to see if they can offer specific specifications in order to test the plates to see if they fall within these specifications. Adjust the temperature to the desired setting, and let the iron cool down 5 minutes before continuing.
