This could be happening for a number of reasons. First, I would make sure that the temperature control dial is actually changing the temperature of your straightener. If it isn't, I would recommend replacing it. If the temperature is changing, but it just seems hotter than it is supposed to be, I would contact the manufacture to see if they can offer specific specifications in order to test the plates to see if they fall within these specifications.
