Not Cooling

this ac was working great all summer. all of a sudden last night it wasn't cooling the room, but the fan was on. the thermometer was reading 57 - but the baby monitor said it was 76; and the room was warm. I shut it off and put it on again this morning. When i turned it on ice flew at me. what is this? is that safe, especially with the baby...
