Why Do The Sides And Top Get Hot?

Is it typical for the dryer back, sides and top to get hot?  The dryer is new.  The vent line to the outside is clear of lint and there is air flow at the exit of the vent outside. This is a new compact Haier dryer HLP140e.  It is installed in a laundry closet on a shelf with a 6 inches clearance on all sides.  There is no door on the closet.
