If you're able to get into your account, then be sure to change your password immediately, also run anti-virus, maltware, and spyware software to check and make sure your computer, laptop, or whatever you usually use to check your email, is secure and free of anything that might track or cause damage. If all is clear and you change your password, you should be okay. 

If someone has sent email from your account to friends/contacts, but you still have access, this is called phishing and you should just change your password, definitely check your computer as I suggested above, and also alert all your contacts so that they won't click on any links or download anything sent to them from your account that aren't from you. 

If you can't get into your account, and have a backup email and/or phone number you can use it to get back into your account just go to gmail's sign in page and click the 'can't access your account?' link and go through the steps to get your account back that way.
