Wrinkles And Lint

Everytime I use this washer, changing water levels and settings each time to try and get it right, my clothes are corkscrewed and covered in lint.  Even after drying I can't get the wrinkles out of my clothes which are mostly 100% cotton.  Have read many reviews with the same problem.  Why is this an issue?  If the clothes are being gently washed, how are they cranked so tightly together that I have trouble getting them apart?
