Breaker Keeps Tripping Water Heater Ge50t06aag

Just recently my hot water heater keeps tripping the breaker.  I can flip it on have hot water for about 10mins then breaker trips again.  Is there a way of telling if its the heating elements or thermostat.  I am trying save some money and not calling the plumber but I don't know much when it comes to hot water heaters. Any advice would be appreciated
