Left Rear Directional Signal Works Intermittently. What Is Cause And Fix?

Sometimes when turning left - the blinker indicator on the dash blinks very quickly - So I know the taillight is not blinking as it should.  What would you suspect is the cause and how should it be repaired?   How do I get to the tail light bulb to change it and inspect the wiring for something that might be loose? Maybe the socket has a problem or  a loose wire or the bulb may be the culprit.   What else could it be?
