Soap Dispenser

I moved into a place with front load washer FTF2140FS0.  In the soap dispenser, the top piece said, "Remove to Clean."  I did, but now cannot put it back on.  I put a load through without that top piece on and the water didn't drain at the end of it. What should I do?  How do I get that piece back on?
