The unit should defrost every 8-10 hrs. If the door is not opened very often, it will defrost every 12 hours. If it is defrost for a long time and thawing frozen food, you may have a bad defrost thermal limit and this would allow the defrost heater to stray on to long an cause the freezer to get to warm. You can fine videos on how to replace this on repair clinic dot com or on utube. If you do it yourself, don't forget to unplug the unit before working on it. If this is an older unit the defrost clock may be going out or is out. However if the clock was stuck in the defrost mode, the unit would be warm all the time and the compressor would not be running.
