If you have the original owner's manual still for the unit, you can reference page 9. It starts out by stating you should clean the filter every 2-3 weeks. Then remove the bucket first, then the filter. Clean the filter with water and let air dry. Once it is dry, replace filter and insert the bucket. This should reset the filter and be good to go from there on out.
