My Check Engine Light Comes On Everyonce In A While While Driving And A Wrench S

My check engine light comes on everyonce in a while while driving and a wrench symbol also appears.  If Iam in cruise controls when it happens it knocks me out of cruise control.  Again this is intermittent and will clear itself up and the fault lights go out.  What could cause this?
