Why Power Steering Makes Whinning Noise Only After Traveling Long Distance?

Ford F150 FX4 2008 5.4. Power Steering makes whinning noise only after traveling long distance. After I stop and let cool down after a while, power steering doesn't make anymore noise. It does not make noise short distances from home to work or driving around town for several hours. What could be the issue?

The power steering fluid may need to be replaced. It thins out when it gets hotter, which is normal. But if the fluid is old or dirty, it will not protect the power steering parts as well as it should when it's hot.

That sound is probably the metal parts in your pump grinding together because the fluid isn't protecting them well enough. Flush out the fluid and replace it with the correct power steering fluid for your vehicle.
