2005 Escape Is Leaking Oil And Transmission Fluid

Service states the Timing cover gasket, oil pan gasket and PTU gaskets need to be replaced.  1.  Why are these gaskets so expensive to replace?  $1,700.  2.  Does this indicate future major repairs on belts, chains, transmission?  Car has 145,000 miles on it.
