Overheating Sound

2004 ford Crown Vic 89k miles, after being driven and turned off has a cracking/overheating sound originagting around/under the engine compartment. No chesk engine lights on. Radiator not overheating, all fluid levels okay. Have been told could be catalatic converter. Any suggestions?
