Changing Head The Gasket On 2000 Ford Explorer Sport 4.0l V6 Sohc

Ok im changing the head gaskets and I need to know if I have to remove the wiring harness and if it would be easier to pull the engine or would that be more of a hassle also I would like to know the plug orders from passenger front to back and driver front to back so that I can properly label them and if I need the gasket assembly kit wich is 145$ or if I can just use the left and right gaskets wich is 45$ each

That's quite a project you are taking on. Are you aware that the 4.0 sohc requires a special set of tools to set the timing? And the crank and cams have to be set when you put the heads on or you will bend some valves?

That particular engine isn't known for head gasket problems. If you are seeing coolant between the head and block, take a close look at the thermostat housing, as they are plastic and have a reputation for springing a leak, and can make it appear that the head gaskets are leaking. AM autparts has a direct fit replacement for about fifty bucks with free shipping. FYI, ford charges about $350 for the same item.

To answer your questions, yes, remove the harness. No, you don't have to pull the engine unless you need to replace the rear chain guides. If you look on the top of the coil pack, it is numbered for the particular plug wire. Passenger front to back is 1,2,3, and drivers is 4,5,6.

You can get by with just the head gaskets. Good Luck!
