Hi, please note that when the 4x4 lights are flashing the computer is seeing something it does not like. There are several possibilities that can cause this. There is no way to know what is causing the lights to flash without a scan tool.
The first, and most common thing, is the shift motor on the transfer case. The motor is bolted on the transfer case and is what actually shifts the transfer case into 4x4. Ninety percent of the time, this is what is wrong when the lights flash.
Second is the 4x4 switch. The switch has resistors inside to tell the computer what position the switch is in. If the resistors go bad the computer doesn't know where you have the 4x4 switch and will flash the lights.
Third is the 4x4 computer itself. In the Ranger the 4x4 system is controlled by a computer called the generic electronics module, GEM for short. If something in the computer goes wrong then these lights can flash as well.
There is a relay that controls the motor, and a solenoid that controls the locking hubs as well. They can cause this problem, but it is very rare.
Unfortunately there are quite a few possibilities. A repair shop with a scan tool can test the system and get a code that tells them exactly why the light is flashing.
Hope this helps. Or refer here:
