1996 Ford Escort Died While Driving.

I have done some initial checks and it looks like the fuel pump and filter are both good. As well, ive made sure theres spark. Next I went to take off the distributor cap to see how it looks and make sure the rotor is good and is spinning. But after taking off the part where all the spark plug wires go into (what I thought was the distributor cap) I found it to be a fully enclosed box with no moving parts. Then I became confused because I was under the impression there should be a rotor spinning inside that thing telling the spark plugs when to fire. How come mine doesnt seem to be a normal cap and rotor system?
