Prepare the vehicle. Park the vehicle on a level surface and set the parking brake. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down. Open the hood and locate the oil pan.
Drain the oil. Place a drain pan under the oil pan and loosen the oil drain plug. Allow the oil to drain completely. Replace the oil drain plug and tighten it securely.
Remove the oil pan bolts. Use a socket wrench to remove the bolts that hold the oil pan in place. Be careful not to drop any of the bolts.
Lower the oil pan. Carefully lower the oil pan, being careful not to damage the gasket.
Remove the old gasket. Scrape off the old gasket material from the oil pan and engine block. Be careful not to damage the mating surfaces.
Apply new gasket sealant. Apply a thin layer of gasket sealant to the mating surfaces of the oil pan and engine block. Follow the instructions on the gasket sealant carefully.
Install the new gasket. Position the new gasket on the oil pan and align it with the bolt holes.
Install the oil pan bolts. Tighten the oil pan bolts in a crisscross pattern, being careful not to overtighten them.
Fill the engine with oil. Use a funnel to add new oil to the engine. Replace the oil filler cap.
Start the engine and check for leaks. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check for any leaks around the oil pan gasket.
Here are some additional tips:
Use the correct type of gasket sealant for your vehicle.
Be careful not to overtighten the oil pan bolts. This can damage the gasket or the oil pan.
Dispose of the old gasket properly.
Changing the oil pan gasket is a relatively straightforward job, but it can be messy. Be sure to wear gloves and old clothes to protect yourself from the oil. If you are not comfortable doing this job yourself, you can take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic.
